The New Mexico Department of Transportation has announced that the project timeline for the US 180 4-lane project planning, designing and construction has been modified with Phase 1 set to begin in the fall of 2024. The project will be completed in three separate stages with phase 1 including widening US 180 from a 2-lane to a 4-lane, realignment of roadway over the existing railroad tracks, removal of the Hurley overpass, to be replaced with at-grade roadway crossing at Pit Access Road. A public meeting will be held prior to beginning the construction to plan the construction phases, expected traffic impacts, timelines and to answer questions from the public. Congratulations to Silver Future Farmers of America member Sarah Gardner who was the State Runner Up in this year’s State competition in Extemporaneous Speaking. In this category, students are given a topic and 30 minutes to prepare a 4 to 6 minute speech to then be asked questions on. Ms. Gardner was able to use her skills and knowledge to give a speech on digital marketing in the AG world, winning her the State Runner Up Plaque.
The Village of Santa Clara, the Mayor and Village Employees are inviting the community to a free “Meet and Greet Root Beer Social” Friday, June 14th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Viola Stone Park. Community members will get the chance to socialize with neighbors, enjoy ice cream and meet the new Santa Clara Mayor and the village employees. After the meet and greet, the first “Music in the Park” event will take place featuring local band Illusion.
Do you like free movies? The First Baptist Church in Deming is offering “Family Movie Nights” every last Wednesday of the month during the summer. Movies will be shown at 7:00 p.m. at Starmax Theatre in Deming. Movie nights are free and open to the public.

The NMSU Luna County Extension and 4-H is having a 2024 4-H State Photo Contest for 4-H members who are interested in showing off their photography skills. Photos must be either digital or film and must contain either animals, people, landscapes, nature or buildings. The overall winner will be chosen by a set of judges and will be awarded an overall rosette and a cash prize of $100.
