There will be a public meeting held to discuss creating a “Senior Village” in Silver City to help seniors gain more access to supportive community services. A “Senior Village” is a community based, nonprofit, grassroots organization formed by a group of volunteers that are interested in helping seniors maintain independence, provide assistance with transportation and maintenance and help maintain quality of life. The meeting will take place tomorrow, January 25th at 1:00 p.m. at the Starlight Theatre, located at 1915 North Gold Street. 

Silver Consolidated Schools has announced that Fox Field is now open and available for the community to use. As of now, asphalt has been laid and when the warmer weather starts the remaining top coat of the project will be completed. The public is encouraged to take caution when using the field as there are components where the cement has not been completed.

Visitors of any age can get a book which includes a variety of activities like mazes, maps, drawings and more to help you learn more about the Cliff Dwellings and the people who built them. Today, Western New Mexico University’s leadership team and members of the student government will be advocating on behalf of the university in Santa Fe. WNMU will be asking for funding to help construct a new home for the New Mexico Center of Excellence in Early Childhood Education, a new Career Technical Education Center and to instill new renewable energy systems. Other legislative requests from the university will be for instruction, research and public service projects, a 6% increase in compensation for university employees with an additional targeted increase for faculty, legislation to pay 100% of employee health insurance costs and funding to include a men’s’ baseball and women’s soccer team.

The Union Pacific Railroad recently coordinated a hazardous material training session that was attended by agencies all over New Mexico. First responders from Animas, Lordsburg, and Silver City as well as junior firefighters received classroom and hands-on training on how to ship hazardous materials, what to do in case of train derailments and accidental spillages and other safety issues surrounding trains and tracks. The session gave first responders the opportunity to gain knowledge and learn the skills necessary for train-related incidents.
