La Plata Middle School, Cliff School and surrounding schools in the area recently participated in the “Teen Maze”, which is an immersive experience designed to simulate real-life scenarios and their consequences. The maze provided a hands-on way for students to contemplate the outcomes of various life choices related to issues like substance use, personal safety and career goals. Students also had the opportunity to encounter different stations that addressed domestic violence, health and distracted driving which showed the potential consequences of these situations, teaching a lesson on how every decision can shape their future.

The New Mexico Center of Excellence for Early Childhood Education of Western New Mexico University recently received a $50,000 Community Investment Fund grant from the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation to help establish a therapeutic preschool classroom at the Childhood Development Center. A therapeutic classroom is designed to facilitate programs that develop children’s foundational cognitive capacities that will support later development, including academic achievement. The therapeutic classroom will have 8 students, allowing for extensive individual attention and will be designed to meet the needs of children aged 3-5, but will be able to screen children as young as 2 and a half to see what children would benefit the most from the program.
