The New Mexico Foundation (NMF) recently announced the award of $165,400 in grants through the Sustaining New Mexico Fund. This year, NMF prioritized organizations serving 15 counties, including Grant, Luna, and Hidalgo, with a focus on projects that alleviate the impacts of natural disasters on communities and expand access to healthy food options, such as food pantries and soup kitchens. Grant recipients include Mesilla Valley Search and Rescue, Organ Mountain Technical Rescue Squad, Deming Silver Linings, El Corazón de Columbus, Inc., and the Doña Ana County Search and Rescue Association, Ltd.

The Deming Public Schools Board of Education will meet on December 18, at 5:30 p.m. at the Emmett Shockley Administration Building to consider a comprehensive agenda addressing academics, district planning, and operational updates. Agenda items include discussion of the planning and development of the 2026–2027 school calendar, strategies to improve academic performance and student outcomes, review of baseline student achievement data, and the development of shared core values, purpose, and long-term goals for the district. Public comment will be available during the meeting, with individuals required to sign up in advance.

In Lordsburg news: 

Child Nutrition will be providing holiday meal boxes for Lordsburg Municipal students, available for pickup on the following dates and times: Thursday, December 18, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Monday, December 22, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Pickup will take place at the Administration Office located at 401 W. 4th Street; families are asked to follow posted signage, as a drive-through pickup format will be implemented. Families who do not have access to transportation are encouraged to contact Lordsburg Municipal Schools.

New Mexico State Senator Gabriel Ramos joined officials from the City of Lordsburg and the Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments Director in Santa Fe to present before the New Mexico Board of Finance, chaired by Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales. The presentation resulted in the approval of an $800,000 emergency grant to address elevated fluoride levels in the city’s water system. The funding will support critical corrective measures to ensure safe drinking water and represents a significant step toward protecting public health and improving overall community well-being in Lordsburg.
