The Montana-based nonprofit organization, Wilderness Land Trust, recently announced its purchase of the 40-acre Spring Canyon private land located in the Gila Wilderness. The group will be working with the Gila National Forest to help transfer Spring Canyon to public ownership as part of the surrounding Gila Wilderness. The Spring Canyon property has been used for grazing, has a year-round water source that feeds the East Fork and Gila River and provides habitat for many species, but has not had much development over the years. The Wilderness Land Trust plans on improving the property by working with the U.S. Forest Service to determine what restoration will need to be done before the land is transferred. This purchase brings the organization one step closer to completing the wilderness and Aldo Leopold’s vision of protecting Spring Canyon and its important wildlife habitat and water resources.
