New Mexico’s Outdoor Recreation Division is investing a $147,741 Trails+ Grant fund to Hidalgo County to help with the construction of a seven-mile, publicly accessible multi-use trail in Playas through a partnership with New Mexico Tech’s Playas Research and Training Center. The project will feature a flexible loop system designed for users of varying abilities and will connect to regional trail networks, enhancing access in an area with limited recreational infrastructure. In addition to promoting outdoor recreation, the initiative will support local youth through education, job training opportunities, and future STEM programming tied to the site.
