Need a burn permit? The Silver City Fire Department issues burn permits for open burning, which can be obtained by visiting either fire station at 1011 North Hudson Street or 1825 East 32nd Street. To get a permit, you’ll need to provide your name, address, contact number, and details about the burning material and extinguishing method. Key permit details include burning hours, wind conditions, and any burning that may be offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor emissions. For more information on conducting legal and safe burns, contact the Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention/Fire Marshal at (575) 956-1275.

Officials from the Mexican Consulate in El Paso recently visited Western New Mexico University to celebrate a new agreement aimed at supporting students of Mexican and Mexican American descent. The IME Becas Scholarships, established through this agreement, are jointly funded by the WNMU Foundation and the Mexican government. While the WNMU Foundation’s contribution comes from its donors, the Mexican government’s share is provided by the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, a division of Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This collaboration not only furthers broader educational goals but also directly aids Mexican and Mexican American students in achieving their academic aspirations and educational opportunities.
