The Silver City Police Department recently celebrated the retirement of Lieutenant Arthur Rascon, honoring his two decades of dedicated service to the community. Throughout his 20-year career, Lt. Rascon earned the respect of colleagues and residents for his commitment to public safety and his dedication to Silver City. During the month of September, the Southwest New Mexico Community Forestry Network will be removing dead and dying trees and performing safety pruning at the Murray Ryan Visitor Center in Silver City. Dedicated to supporting healthy urban forests, the Network partners with communities across southwest New Mexico to plant trees and provide long-term technical support. Southwest New Mexico Community Forestry Network is currently working in Silver City, Santa Clara, Hurley, Bayard, Deming, and Lordsburg to expand each community’s tree canopy through planning, logistics, planting assistance, and ongoing tree care and maintenance.
Western New Mexico University has announced a partnership with TimelyCare, an online platform that delivers medical and mental health services to colleges and universities. Through TimelyCare, students will have access to a range of services, including TalkNow, a free, on-demand counseling option that connects students with licensed professionals to address mental health concerns. The platform offers students unlimited TalkNow consultations, up to twelve scheduled counseling sessions, and unlimited medical consultations. These services will be available to both undergraduate and graduate students, providing a valuable supplement to the university’s in-person care options.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is currently accepting public comment through Friday, September 19 on Amendment 8 to the Federal Fiscal Year 2024–2029 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). The six-year program encompasses a broad range of multimodal transportation projects, including roads, bridges, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and transit, funded through federal, state, local, and private sources.
