The Gila National Forest reminds visitors that while autumn brings warm days, cooler nights, and an influx of hunters to the woods, the risk of human-caused wildfires remains constant. Campfires should never be left unattended and must be fully extinguished to prevent wildfire outbreaks. Visitors are urged to follow the “Drown, Stir, Feel” method: drown the campfire with water, stir the ashes with a shovel, and feel the ashes with the back of the hand to ensure they are cool. If the ashes remain too hot to touch, the fire is not safe to leave and the process should be repeated as necessary.
