Read West Adult Literacy Center is offering online tutoring classes for those who are interested in becoming a tutor for the Literacy Link-Leamos program in Silver City. The classes will cover basic literacy skills and English as a second language and Literacy Link-Leamos will provide the textbooks and cover the workshop fees. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a tutor, stop by the Silver City Public Library to fill out a new tutor intake form.
This past fiscal year, Silver City Pick It Up-Toss No Mas recruited 300 volunteers who contributed 700 volunteer hours and collected over 7,965 pounds of trash, debris and recyclables from Silver City’s roads and waterways. Pick It Up- Toss No Mas was also able to develop the “Business Pledge Program” and with funding from New Mexico Clean and Beautiful and working with the Town of Silver City Parks Department, were able to install three additional trash receptacles at key locations in Big Ditch Park and Lions Park. By encouraging residents to take pride in the community, the partnership between the Town of Silver City and the Gila Resources Information Project has organized community members, sports teams, businesses and organizations to help keep Silver City clean and beautiful.
The Silver City Gospel Mission is in need of individuals who are interested in volunteering their time to help keep the mission available to those in need. The mission is in need of volunteers to help cook, serve food, perform janitorial and maintenance work, set up and distribute food for the food pantries, unload food trucks and much more. The goal of the Silver City Gospel Mission is to help the homeless and those at risk who are struggling to find the most basic needs and are dedicated to providing clients with spiritual guidance and support. If you are interested in helping kids in need, the Deming Police Department will be having a “Cram the Cruiser” event on Thursday, October 26th from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The police department will be collecting coats, hoodies, jackets and sweatshirts of all sizes to donate to the “Coats 4 Kids” program. The event will be held at the Walmart parking lot in Deming and all donations are greatly appreciated.
Four Luna County employees recently received service awards for their hard work and dedication to the county. Irma Geaney and Jesse Perez were both recognized for their 5 years of service to the Road Department and the “Parents As Teachers” program. Frankie Tarazon was honored for his 15 years of service to the Planning Department and Lauree Sanchez for her 20 years of service to Dispatch. Congratulations to all four employees.
