During the Silver City Town Council meeting, the Gila Resource Information Project (GRIP) presented the Rural Southwest New Mexico Urban Forestry Project. This five-year initiative has received $5 million in funding from the USDA Forest Service, which has been awarded to Western New Mexico University. The project encompasses three main components: The development of a new certificate program in urban forestry and arboriculture at the university, the establishment of an arboretum that will serve as a venue for events and a learning environment, and the creation of a community forestry network involving six communities—Bayard, Santa Clara, Hurley, Lordsburg, Deming, and Silver City—each with plans to enhance their tree canopy. This initiative will facilitate the planting of 1,000 trees in each of the six communities.
