Freeport-McMoRan was recently named one of the 50 most community-minded companies in the United States with its inclusion on the 2023 “Civic 50” list that recognizes corporate volunteerism and community engagement. The list, which Freeport has made 11 times since its inception in 2012, is compiled by the Points of Light Foundation, a nonpartisan global nonprofit organization that recognizes companies with annual U.S. revenues of at least $1 billion that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in investment of resources, stakeholder engagement and volunteerism. In 2023, Freeport-McMoRan awarded a total of $450,000 to organizations in the form of grants, sponsorships and other monetary support to Grant County including; The Center for Health Innovation, City of Bayard, Grant County Community Foundation and Western New Mexico University.
Aldo Leopold Charter School students Maya Reeves and Willow Sprague-Robinson were recently awarded the 2024 Ella, Michael and Ella Memorial Scholarship. Maya plans on attending the University of California at Santa Barbara to study Marine Biology and Willow will attend Bard College to pursue a degree in Sustainable Architectural Design. The scholarship provides Aldo graduates the opportunity to reach their own potential and to inspire young people to follow their passion for the environment, arts, music, community involvement and to support young people as they begin college. Congratulations to both students.
During the recent Town of Bayard Regular meeting, the project coordinator of Southwest New Mexico ACT presented the Mine Mill Hall restoration project, which is part of the Five Points Project that includes the restoration of the Waterworks building in Silver City, the Old Hurley schoolhouse in Arenas Valley, Bradley Hotel in Santa Clara and the train depot in Hurley. In June, AmeriCorps Youths and Youth Conservation Corp students will start work on the Mine Mill Hall with the number one goal being to save the building from the water run off during the monsoon rains.

In honor of Mental Health Month, The Hidalgo County Health Council will be hosting a free Suicide Prevention Training this evening, May 28th. The training is for those interested in learning how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help. The training will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the County Manager’s Conference Room located at 305 Pyramid Street in Lordsburg. A light dinner will be served.
