Western New Mexico University has received a $32,493 grant from the Freeport-McMoRan Community and Social Investment Fund to strengthen hands-on scientific research opportunities for students. The funding will support the purchase of a high-precision microbalance and a freeze dryer, and will focus on studying ecological changes in the Gila ecoregion while integrating analytical techniques into biology, chemistry and environmental science courses. The initiative is estimated to benefit about 100 students, with the project running through January 2036.
In recognition of March 2026 being proclaimed Arbor Month, the New Mexico Forestry Division is highlighting the vital role trees play in communities statewide. The division is marking the occasion by emphasizing its partnership with Tree New Mexico, which works to build and maintain urban forests in heat-impacted neighborhoods. The nonprofit has recently expanded into Silver City, planting more than 1,000 trees in less than two years and restoring green spaces across southern New Mexico. Supported by Forestry Division project foresters and local volunteers, these efforts have strengthened and expanded urban tree canopy in participating communities.
