4-H youth from Grant County recently showcased their skills at the National Western Roundup in Denver, Colorado. The competitive team, consisting of Tucker Gatlin, Tanner Frost, and Dusty Waters, had the opportunity to compete against top state teams from across the nation. The team’s performance in the National Western Roundup Horse Judging competition yielded impressive results, including: 7th High Team Overall in the Nation, 3rd High Team in Halter, 9th High Team in Performance, 5th High Team in Reasons, and notable individual achievements by Tanner Frost, who placed 4th High Individual in Halter and 6th High Individual in Reasons. Congratulations to all three students. 

The Gila National Forest, Reserve Ranger District is preparing to conduct prescribed burns to eliminate accumulated slash at the SU and Gilita community slash disposal sites, as well as 427 acres of post-timber sale slash piles from the Doe Gun timber sale. The Doe Gun slash piles are located along National Forest System Road (NFSR) 141 on the west side of Bull Basin Canyon, approximately 11 miles south-southeast of Reserve. These prescribed fire activities are scheduled to begin as early as tomorrow, January 15th, and are expected to continue through the end of March, depending on weather conditions, fuel availability, and resource capacity.

Faculty members from the Western New Mexico University (WNMU) College of Education recently visited a border community, an experience that proved to be both enlightening and informative. During the visit, the faculty engaged with the administration and staff at Columbus Elementary School, gaining valuable insights into the challenges faced by students who cross the border daily, as well as the experiences of their teachers. The visit was driven by a desire to deepen the faculty’s understanding of the students they are educating, as well as to better prepare future educators for the unique circumstances their students may encounter in the classroom.

Local Deming high school students are invited to participate in a fun, substance-free bowling event this evening, January 14th, at Starmax. The event will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., offering an enjoyable evening of bowling, music, and food in a safe and engaging environment. Organized by the Luna County DWI Program and supported by the Office of National Drug Control Policy’s CDS Grant, the event is designed to promote positive, substance-free activities for local youth.
