Hidalgo Medical Services (HMS) announced the launch of its new Patient Transportation Service, made possible through the commitment of its employees to the organization’s mission and support from the New Mexico Rural Healthcare Delivery Fund, which focuses on improving access to care for underserved communities. The service will offer eligible HMS patients safe, reliable, and compassionate transportation to and from scheduled HMS medical, behavioral health, dental, and Community Health Worker (CHW) appointments.

The Community Work Group (CWG) will convene to discuss matters related to the Chino Administrative Order on Consent (AOC), a voluntary yet binding agreement between the New Mexico Environment Department and Freeport-McMoRan Chino Mines Company. The meeting will focus on evaluating potential health and environmental impacts from past mining activities and will provide community members with an opportunity to offer informed recommendations to support decision-making under the AOC. The meeting is scheduled for this evening, December 9 at 6:00 p.m. at the Bayard Community Center.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation advises motorists to exercise caution in several active construction zones throughout Luna County and the surrounding region. In Deming, work is ongoing on the U.S. 180 signalization project at Gold Street and at the intersections of Railroad, Pine, Cedar, and Ash streets. Additional activity on U.S. 180 includes core drilling near mile marker 143 north of Deming, where reduced speed limits and potential lane closures are in place. Construction of a box culvert also continues on NM 11 near the Columbus Port of Entry, with reduced speeds expected to remain in effect through spring of next year.

The Wilderness Ranger District of the Gila National Forest plans to begin prescribed fire operations on December 14. Planned activities include the burning of slash piles created during thinning projects adjacent to private property in Cooney Canyon along the Rio Mimbres. These piles are situated along Forest Road 150A/Cooney Road, approximately six miles north of the Mimbres Valley. Operations are expected to continue through December as weather conditions permit. Prescribed fire is used to reduce overgrown vegetation and enhance protection for local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from potential wildfires.
