Deming Public Schools is asking for the community’s input at the “Public Input “meeting they will be having on April 11th at 4:30 p.m. The school will be discussing the Financial Forecast for Fiscal year 2024 and will have a “Question and Answer” session. The meeting will take place at the Emmett Shockley Administration Building. The public is encouraged to attend. 

The Gila National Forest, Wilderness Ranger District has implemented an area closure while it conducts the 320-acre Sapillo prescribed fire. The area closure took into effect at midnight on April 8th and will remain closed until the area is safe for public re-entry. The area closure for the Sapillo prescribed fire is located along the south side of New Mexico Highway 35, west of Forest Road 88, north of Forest Roads 4078R, the Sapillo Campground, Forest Road 960, and east of Forest Road 4206. 

Silver City Future Farmers of America (FFA) had 30 students and various teams that participated in the 2024 New Mexico State FFA this past weekend with many of them taking home medals. The Silver FFA Agriculture Mechanics Team took home first place. The Horse Team brought home the Runners Up medal. The Milk Quality Team took home third place and the Vet Science Team took home fourth place. Congratulations to all the teams and students. 

The Gila Resources Information Project (GRIP) is announcing their Spring Internship Program to help revitalize Silver City’s Big Ditch Park. GRIP is looking for enthusiastic youth interns between the ages of 14 and 24 who are interested in helping with Big Ditch Park improvement projects. Students will help build rock and juniper rain gardens on steep slopes, help with restoration of park native plantings, improvements and maintenance and much more.
