Gabriel Vigil, a 7th grader from La Plata Middle School, and Shea Barentine, a senior from Cliff Schools, have been named Kiwanis Students of the Month in recognition of their exceptional qualities and achievements. Gabriel was honored for his kindness, positive attitude, and eagerness to assist others both inside and outside the classroom. Shea, known for her academic drive, leadership, and compassion, was celebrated for her outstanding contributions to her school and community. Congratulations to both students. 

Luna County is notifying its residents that it is currently updating certain property addresses to ensure compliance with the New Generation 911 (NG911) federal emergency response standards. These updates are essential to enhance the accuracy of dispatch services, improve emergency response coordination, and strengthen public safety across the County. Affected residents will receive detailed instructions starting on May 3rd.

Honored with the “Beating Heart” award was Brenda Hood. “Chamber Member of the Year” went to New Mexico Tech-Playas Research and Training Center. “Community Organization of the Year” went to Hidalgo County Cancer Walk. Recognized as “Business of the Year” was The Smoke Shack. Honored with the “Outstanding Youth Volunteer of the Year” award was Justin Davis. “Volunteer of the Year” went to Beth Cox  and the award for “Citizen of the Year” went to Amy Jones.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham recently signed 60 bills into law, addressing a broad spectrum of priorities, including healthcare access, public safety, economic development, elections, and education. Key measures to strengthen public safety include the Turquoise Alert System (SB 41) and enhanced DNA collection for certain offenders (HB 340). Economic development is supported through the Strategic Economic Development Site Readiness program (SB 169), while educational opportunities are expanded with the Community School Fund & Framework (SB 387). Public Education Reform Fund Uses (SB 201), and Broadband for Education (SB 401). Other notable legislation includes increasing transparency in healthcare transactions (HB 586), and enhancing emergency response capabilities for search and rescue operations (SB 353).
