The main courtroom at the Grant County Magistrate Court in Bayard has been recently dedicated to Judge Y.B. Morales, the community’s first magistrate judge. Judge Morales began his judicial career in 1963 when he served as a justice of the peace in Bayard. He became a full-time magistrate judge in 1984, retiring from his mining job that same year. Judge Morales continued to serve the community until his retirement from the bench on December 31, 2006. The dedication of the courtroom honors his significant contributions to providing quality legal services in the region.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation has announced that both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-10 at Exit 24, near Lordsburg are closed and will remain closed through April 2nd for partial bridge removal. During this time, traffic in both directions will be rerouted off the highway and back on at the exit ramp while demolition work is underway. Motorists are advised to expect delays and to follow the posted road closure signs.

Southwest New Mexico legislators have announced the successful collaboration in securing significant funding that will have a meaningful impact on the region. Some of the Capital Outlay-funded projects include $60,000 for the equipping, furnishing, and improving accessibility at the Fort Bayard properties in Santa Clara; $900,000 to renovate, equip, and furnish the City Hall Annex Building in Silver City; $200,000 for the construction, renovation, and furnishing of improvements to Gough Park in Silver City; $1,680,000 to purchase, install, and equip communication systems aimed at enhancing border security and improving communication capabilities; and $700,000 to acquire a CT scanner for Gila Regional Medical Center. These initiatives, totaling nearly $5 million, will help provide essential support for local municipalities, counties, and quality of life improvements across Southwest New Mexico.
