Congratulations to all the winners of the Cliff-Gila Grant County Fair that took place this past weekend. This year’s competition was intense across various showmanship categories, including steers, lambs, goats, and swine. Sam McDonald was named the Senior Steer Showmanship Champion, while Cayden Lopez earned the Reserve Steer Award. In Senior Lamb Showmanship, Carson Moore took the top honor. Christopher Bennett was recognized as the Senior Swine Showmanship Champion, with Dusty Waters earning the Reserve title. For Senior Goat Showmanship, Cayden Lopez claimed the championship, and Laney Lopez secured the Reserve Champion title.

Since 2001, Literacy Link Leamos has generously provided approximately 400,000 new, age-appropriate books to elementary school children throughout Grant County. With retail values ranging from $4 to $30 per book, this amounts to an estimated $4 million in books gifted to young readers. Thank you to Literacy Link Leamos for its unwavering dedication to promoting literacy to children in the community.

The Luna County Health Council is offering free Health and Wellness screenings tomorrow, September 27th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Luna County Public Health Office. If you’re 18 years or older, you can get important health checks including Blood Glucose levels, Blood Pressure, Body Mass Index, Heart Rate, A1C, and Pulse Oxygen Levels. The screenings are being provided to help individuals become more proactive and stay on top of their health. 

Animas High School students, Angel Pintor and Anthony Mahler were both nominated by their coaches to represent the school at the New Mexico Activities Association Student Leadership Meeting in Las Cruces earlier this month. At this event, they collaborated with fellow students from across the Southwest, engaging in discussions on vital topics such as financial wellness, mental health awareness, student leadership, and sportsmanship. Congratulations to both students.

Join the National Park Service for “National Public Lands Day” on September 28th. Celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday of September since 1994, this event is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort. Last year, over 130 national parks participated, with 7,600 volunteers contributing an impressive 41,500 hours of service. In recognition of this special day, all national parks that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone, making it a perfect opportunity to explore and give back to the cherished public lands.
