The Gila National Forest has announced an increase in fire danger levels, now categorized as High, due to a warm, dry fall that has significantly dried out local fuels. As hunting season is in full swing, hunters are urged to take precautions to protect both their favorite hunting areas and local wildlife from the risk of damaging wildfires. Also, to further reduce the risk of igniting a wildfire, avoid parking vehicles over tall grasses, ensure that chains do not drag behind vehicles, and confirm that campfires are completely extinguished. When extinguishing a campfire, use plenty of water to thoroughly soak the coals, stir the mixture to ensure even cooling, and check for any residual heat by using the back of your hand.

The New Mexico Cattle Growers Association is pleased to announce that Gage Greeman, a fifth grader from Cliff, has been awarded the Heritage Buckle for Grant County. In his essay on establishing new traditions in today’s agriculture, Gage expressed his desire to implement direct-to-market sales for his family and neighbors in marketing their livestock. He aims to bring livestock marketing directly to the dinner plate, ensuring that ranchers receive the margins currently taken by middlemen. Residing on his family ranch near Silver City, Gage enjoys showing heifers and goats and immersing himself in ranch life. He aspires to continue ranching and farming in the future. Congratulations to Gage on his awesome accomplishment.
