Silver City has enacted Stage 2 Severe Drought and Local Fire Restrictions due to elevated fire danger and a declared fire emergency. The order prohibits burn permits, open fires such as campfires and grills, and all open burning on public lands and town property, along with restrictions on outdoor smoking, vehicle parking on dry vegetation, and the disposal of burning materials. Certain approved gas grills may be allowed under specific conditions, and fireworks are heavily restricted or prohibited. 

At this year’s the30something awards celebration, three Grant County nonprofits each received a $30,000 grant to support lasting community improvements. The Lotus Center was awarded funding to replace its leaking roof and install air conditioning. High Desert Humane Society received funding to construct new animal runs at its shelter, while the Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society was awarded funds to restore an officers’ quarters building that will become the future Fort Bayard Apache and Buffalo Soldier Museum. 

The Silver Consolidated Schools Board of Education was recognized at the New Mexico School Boards Association (NMSBA) 2026 School Law Conference for its outstanding attendance and participation in regional school board meetings during the 2025-26 school year. The conference, attended by more than 400 education leaders from across the state, also celebrated student achievement through the NMSBA scholarship program. Among the Region VIII scholarship recipients were Taylor McWhorter from Cobre High School, Luke Stailey from Silver High School, and Justin Platz from Lordsburg High School, each of whom were recognized for their academic success, leadership, community involvement, and extracurricular achievements.
