The nonprofit organization “Fight Like a Girl” will be having a free Narcan training class this Saturday, July 27th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Silver City Recreation Center. The training will be presented by someone in recovery who has real life experience that will take a deep dive into the pharmacological mechanisms of opioids and how Naloxone works, how it can be misused and the effects it can have on an individual. 

The Grant County 4-H’ ers recently competed in the State 4-H Conference where they were able to finish in the top ten in three different categories. The 2024 Livestock Judging Team one placed third, with Tucker Gatlin placing third highest individual in the state. Also, the 2024 Skillathon Team one placed 4th and the 2024 Skillathon Team two placed seventh in the state. The big winners were The 2024 Horse Judging Team, which includes members Sarah Gardner, Tucker Gatlin, Tanner Frost and Dusty Waters, who placed first in the state, qualifying them for nationals in Denver.  Congratulations to all the team members and winners. 

The New Mexico Tourism Department is further expanding its investment in New Mexico’s tourism events and festivals for fiscal year 2025. The department’s Tourism Event Growth and Sustainability Program offers eligible New Mexico entities that host tourism-related events with technical assistance, marketing resources and sponsorship support. For fiscal year 2025, the tourism department is awarding $533,238 in support to 38 events, with both numbers representing a record for the agency. Tourism events in 16 destinations across New Mexico will be supported by the program, including 11 first-time participants for the program including the Silver City Blues Festival, Deming Great American Duck Race, Western New Mexico University’s Fiesta Latina and the Lordsburg Tejano Fest.

At a recent news conference, the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority, which has rebranded to Housing New Mexico, reported on the findings of the state’s most recent housing needs assessment and outlined how $84.6 million in state funding will be allocated to address those needs. The New Mexico Housing Needs Assessment is a comprehensive annual report produced by New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority that comprises an array of housing indicators that describe affordable housing needs in New Mexico. The state funding will allow Housing New Mexico to continue their pursuit to do more to help New Mexicans get into safe and more affordable homes by creating more housing, preserving existing affordable housing and by creating stable housing environments.
