PNM has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to volunteer first responders in New Mexico through its “Helping Heroes” program. A total of $228,000 in grants was distributed to eight organizations, including the Pinos Altos Volunteer Fire Rescue organization. These funds will be used to purchase safety equipment and support professional training, safety education, recruitment, and behavioral health initiatives. Applications for 2025 funding are now open, and additional information can be found on the PNM website.
The Silver City Mayor is inviting the public to join him at the next “Monday Meeting with the Mayor” on Monday, January 20th. The meeting will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at The Tranquilbuzz Coffee house, located at 300 North Arizona Street in Silver City. All community members are invited to stop by anytime between those hours to share their input, ideas and inspirations toward making our town even better than it already is.
Congratulations to Lordsburg students Madison Mansfield, Derryn and Gabriel Martinez, and Shaelynn Guerrero for their outstanding performances at the New Mexico Elks Association’s Southwest District Hoop Shoot, held in Alamogordo this past weekend. Madison and Shaelynn each secured first place in their respective age groups and will advance to the NMEA State Hoop Shoot in Albuquerque on February 22nd. The Martinez brothers earned second place finishes in their age groups. Congratulations to all the participants and winners, and best of luck at the upcoming State Hoop Competition.

Luna County has awarded Deming Excavating Inc. the contracts for the Rockhound Road and McCan Road Improvement projects. These projects will involve earthwork, drainage improvements, and erosion control measures. Work on the projects began on January 13th and is expected to be completed within approximately 70 days. The county advises motorists traveling through the affected intersections to be vigilant and follow traffic control measures to ensure safety. Additionally, road closures will be implemented for the installation of culverts. For further information or any concerns, community members are encouraged to contact the Luna County Road Department.
