The Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society has announced the addition of their “Junior Historian Program” that includes a Junior Historian activity book. By completing an Artifact Scavenger Hunt while visiting the Fort Bayard Museum, participating students will be able to collect stamps in their book while viewing artifacts, which will entitle them to earning signed certificates and a badge designating them as “Junior Historians”. The book will also contain crossword puzzles, word finds, mazes and more. The program is funded from assistance from the Covid Relief program and the New Mexico Humanities Council. Come join The Silver City Mayor at the next “Monday Meeting with the Mayor” on Monday, August 12th. The meeting will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Javalena Coffee House located at 117 West Market Street in Downtown Silver City. NMED and NMHealth will be offering up to 100 free water tests for private wells serving homes that are not connected to a water utility in Deming and surrounding areas Saturday, August 10th. They will be testing for Nitrate, Iron, Sulfate, Fluoride, Arsenic and Electrical conductivity. The testing will take place from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Luna County Courthouse Park, located at 700 South Silver Avenue. For information on how to collect a water sample, visit the website.

The New Mexico Department of Health has confirmed a West Nile virus infection in a resident of Union County. The individual was not hospitalized and is currently recovering at home. West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, therefore New Mexico residents are encouraged to take precautions when outdoors. To help protect yourself from the virus, NMHealth recommends you use approved insect repellent every time you go outside, wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, eliminate water-holding containers where mosquitoes lay their eggs and keep windows and doors closed if they do not have a screen door. Symptoms of West Nile virus can include neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis.
