The New Mexico Department of Transportation has announced that the highly anticipated U.S. 180 expansion project south of Bayard is scheduled to begin on November 4th. This project will be executed in three distinct phases, with the first phase projected to last approximately 18 months. Phase one will extend from Bayard to south of the railroad crossing in Hurley, and will ultimately expand the highway to four lanes extending to Deming. This initial phase will also involve the realignment of the road over the railroad tracks, pavement rehabilitation, and shoulder widening. A public meeting will be held in October prior to the start of construction to discuss the project’s phases, anticipated traffic impacts, timelines, and to address any questions from the community.

In a strategic initiative to strengthen family support, the New Mexico Health Care Authority has announced the elimination of program fees for child support services. This decision follows the allocation of sufficient funding to the Child Support Program during the 2024 Legislative Session. Previously, fees were applied to cases not linked with the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Medicaid programs, which already benefited from complimentary child support services. The policy change is designed to encourage increased participation from parents and guardians managing children across separate households and to reduce the financial barriers that lower-income families have faced in accessing vital child support services.
