The Grant County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a series of burglaries that occurred in the Pinos Altos area on August 18 and 19. Residents are urged to remain vigilant by locking doors and windows, securing valuables, and considering additional safety measures such as outdoor lighting or security systems. Deputies have increased patrols in the area while investigators actively pursue leads to identify those responsible. The Sheriff’s Department encourages the public to assist by reporting any suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities to Central Dispatch at 575-388-8840.

Western New Mexico University’s Bachelor of Science program in Early Childhood Education has achieved a significant milestone with its first-ever accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Widely recognized as the gold standard in early childhood education, NAEYC accreditation reflects a program’s commitment to excellence by aligning curriculum and assessments with national standards and using student performance data to continually enhance teaching and learning. This recognition places WNMU among a select group of institutions nationwide preparing highly qualified educators to work with children from birth through age eight.

The 2025 county election season will officially begin on Tuesday, August 26, when residents of Grant, Luna, and Hidalgo counties may file to run for office in the regular local election. Prospective candidates are encouraged to arrive prepared with the required documentation during designated filing hours. The Hidalgo County Fair Board invites all county residents to showcase their talents and accomplishments from the past year by entering items in the Exhibit Building at the fairgrounds. Entries, which may include culinary creations, preserved goods, crafts, artwork, photography, flowers, vegetables, sewing, and fancy work, will be accepted on Thursday, August 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Exhibit Building will be open for public viewing on Friday, August 22 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, August 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Participation is free, offering community members an opportunity to share their creativity and skills with others.
