Western New Mexico University continues to grow, with fall 2023 freshman, Hispanic and International student enrollment up 37% from the same time last year and overall growth up over 6% to nearly 3,600 students. As one of the original Hispanic-Serving Institutions, WNMU traditionally has a large number of Hispanic students, with this year’s number increasing by 10.4% and the number of international students has increased by 26.9% over the last year. The growth in these numbers reflects a renewed interest in students pursuing a higher education at WNMU and because of the positive impact of the Opportunity Scholarship, which offers free tuition for New Mexican residents. The Gila National Forest has received 2023/24 Every Kid Outdoors national public lands passes to distribute to fourth grade students. In order to get a pass, fourth grade students or their parents must visit the Every Kid Outdoors website to complete an online activity and print their personalized paper voucher, which then can be taken to the Gila National Forest office for a pass. The passes cover entrance or day use fees to federal recreation sites and are valid through August 31, 2024. For more information on obtaining a pass, visit the website.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) recently led the NM 159 Vehicle Length Restrictions Study and Analysis, which was conducted to see how different types of vehicles navigate a portion of NM 159. Based on the results, recommendations were made with the aim of improving safety for all vehicles traveling through NM 159. The NMDOT will be having a meeting to share their findings and consider public comments on October 5th at 5:30 p.m. at the Glenwood Community Center.
Silver Consolidated Schools has announced that the second phase of the “Fox Field Track Resurfacing Project” will take place October 16th. This phase is estimated to take approximately 2 weeks and tasks will include removing the existing asphalt, recompacting the base to the proper grade and laying new asphalt. The track will reopen for the public to use for the next couple of weeks until phase 2 of the project begins. If going to use the track, extreme caution is emphasized as the rubber layer has been removed causing cracks and uneven surfaces, which can pose a tripping hazard.
