To help keep the Farm Credit of New Mexico capital working for the success of local agriculture, American AgCredit is funding a $10 million Rural Roots Endowment which will be used to invest in the long-term viability, sustainability and profitability of agriculture in New Mexico. American AgCredit designed the endowment to provide grants and direct funds to New Mexico agricultural organizations that support the next generation of farmers and ranchers like FFA, 4-H and junior livestock as well as protect New Mexico agriculture, fight hunger and continue AG education in New Mexico. The Rural Roots Endowment grant funds will be released starting next year.

The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District is preparing to implement the Jaybird and Mill fire projects starting next week. The 2,600-acre Jaybird prescribed fire project is in the Signal Peak area, near Meadow Creek and Jaybird Canyon and the 1,500-acre Mill prescribed fire is located west of NM Highway 15, in the Sheep Corral area. Both prescribed fires are aimed to to lower future fire intensity, project wildlife habitat and reduce hazardous fuel loads in the area. Smoke may be visible from the communities of Pinos Altos, Silver City, Lake Roberts and San Lorenzo and smoke impacts to New Mexico Highway 15, 35 and the Mimbres and Sapillo drainages are expected. At the recent City of Bayard Council Meeting, Senator Siah Hemphill Correra gave an update on Legislation and stated that New Mexico is leading the country in employment gain and currently has more jobs open than people working. She also stated that the finance committee is seeing a surplus in revenue and is working on how to protect and use it in future projects that help improve quality of life in New Mexico. The finance committee is also working on the Healthcare policy and looking to build a Vo-tech Center in the Mining District which continues to be one of the leading contributions in the retail trade. 

The Hidalgo County 4-H Agronomy team, made up of Journey Sheehan, Russell Haught, Francis Racicot and Leo Kerr recently received a $350 scholarship sponsored by the Quay County Soil and Water Conservation District. They received the scholarship due to winning the New Mexico 4-H State Conference and for their presentation on the process it took to win the state title. Congratulations to all four students. 

To help parents encourage and motivate their children, Silver Consolidated Schools will be having a “How to Motivate your Child” session on Wednesday, October 11th at 6:00 p.m. They will be discussing how to develop intrinsic values and the effects of negative reinforcements.
