Absentee and Early voting for the November 2nd election has begun at the Grant County Clerk’s Office located at 1400 Highway 180 East in Silver City. The hours will run from Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. In addition, on Saturday October 16th, Early Voting begins at the Bayard Community Center. The last day for early voting is Saturday October 30th. The ballot includes municipal elections, soil and water conservation districts, school board positions, and school bond issues. The Gila National Forest has announced that the new Acting Forest Supervisor on the Gila National Forest. Rob Lever will take over the position on October 11th and will serve on the Gila for a 120-day detail. Rob currently serves as the district ranger on the Springerville Ranger District on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in eastern Arizona, where he has served since 2018. He began his Forest Service career in 1993 as a wildland firefighter on the Crescent Ranger District of the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon. Lever was raised in Bend, Oregon and went to college at Linfield College where he earned a BA in Sociology.
The Silver City Library is participating in Jumpstarts 16th Annual Read for the Record program to celebrate literacy. The national campaign is an annual fall event engaging over 2 million participants in order increase awareness about the critical importance and impact of early literacy. In addition, the program helps make high-quality children’s books accessible for all children and provides support for early learners in underserved communities. Locally, the community can participate in several ways on Thursday, October 28th at the Silver City Library and on the WNMU campus.
