Here’s a look at some local news brought to you by Silver City Radio.

New Mexico Department of Health officials released updated information regarding statewide COVID-19 cases as of October 4th. An additional 1,776 additional new COVID-19 cases were reported across the state along with the following local numbers that include: Grant County with 25 news cases; Catron County with one new case; Luna County with 15 new cases; and Hidalgo County with one new case. Including the newly reported cases, New Mexico has now had a total of 255,577 COVID-19 cases.

This Friday and Saturday, The Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society is hosting several events, including a field trip in commemoration of the Mormon Battalion and General Kearny’s Army of the West 1846-47. During this time- period, two sections of the US Army of the West passed through Silver City on their way to California. Scheduled this Friday, October 8th, the public is invited to meet at the Butterfield Rest Stop in Deming at 9:00 A.M. to later travel to Cooke’s Canyon Road and caravan on to the Fort Cummings area. There are additional events planned for Saturday along with the official dedication of the new “Army of the West” interpretive sign at the Silver City Visitors Center. The month of October is designated as National Fire Prevention Month with the goal of reminding the public to take the necessary precautionary steps in preventing dangerous and life-threatening fires. Throughout this month, Silver City Radio will share important tips and information on how to prevent fires, especially during the winter months when there is an increase in home fires, deaths, and injuries.
