The Wilderness Ranger District of the Gila National Forest is seeking public comments on a proposal to remove unbranded and unauthorized cattle from the Gila Wilderness. According to a news release, the removal, using lethal and/or non-lethal methods is necessary for the protection of resources. The news release further states that a total of 756 cattle have been removed (alive or euthanized) from the Gila Wilderness. In February 2022, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services conducted a 2-day aerial operation during which 65 cattle were killed. In addition, “If lethal removal methods are selected, an area closure would be implemented prior to and during any aerial euthanasia missions.” All cattle would be left onsite to naturally decompose. The shooting would be scheduled over a two seven-day periods during winter when visitor activity within the Gila Wilderness is lowest. The public is encouraged to submit issues or ideas in forming a final proposal that meets certain described needs. Comments must be received or postmarked by January 9, 2023.
