The Frontier Food Hub’s first ever Mining District “Salsa Showdown” proved to be a huge success, featuring over a dozen unique entries. This event was a key component of an outreach program by the National Center for Frontier Communities, which recently received a $398,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to enhance community food production in the Mining District. Dolores Altamirano of Mimbres won first place with her salsa, “Dee’s Spicy Habit”, crafted from ingredients grown in her garden. As part of her prize, 500 jars of Dolores’s salsa will be produced and marketed statewide by the Frontier Food Hub. Congratulations to Dolores!

The old Waterworks property in Silver City has undergone a remarkable transformation from its former abandoned state to a vibrant and lush space, thanks to dedicated volunteer work, creative vision, and community support. On September 20th, from 11 am to 1 pm, the community is invited to the first open house at the property, located north of Jose Barrios Elementary School on Little Walnut Road, to celebrate these efforts. Silver City Mayor Ken Ladner will kick off the celebration with remarks and present certificates of appreciation to volunteers, including Youth Conservation Corp (YCC) members, who contributed significantly to both the Waterworks grounds and the Silva Creek Nature Trail. Looking ahead to 2025, plans include the interior repair and remodeling of the Waterworks building to create a cultural heritage center that will offer exhibits and educational opportunities about the region’s diverse history.

The third week of September is designated as National Farm Safety and Health Week to highlight the heightened risks associated with the fall harvest, one of agriculture’s busiest and most dangerous seasons. According to the CDC, farmers and ranchers face significant risks, including respiratory diseases, skin cancer, hearing loss, and even fatalities. The AgriSafe Network further notes that agriculture is unique in its overlap between work and home, putting family members at risk as well. This year’s focus includes equipment and rural roadway safety, health and wellness, generational farming, confined spaces, and injury reporting.
