Deming Public Schools is letting all parents and guardians know that they have the right to request information about their children’s teachers and administrators under the federal “Every Student Succeeds Act” as well as New Mexico law. The employee’s teaching degree, major and license information are all eligible for disclosure upon request and families can obtain the information by contacting the child’s school and requesting a “Right to Know” form which will be available on the Infinite Campus platform. The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office in cooperation with the Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District, will be closing New Mexico 15 for approximately one week due to a prescribed burn. Beginning today, a temporary closure will be in place from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. along NM 15 at Signal Peak Road and Wild Horse Mesa. Smoke may be visible from the communities of Mimbres, San Lorenzo, Silver City and Pinos Altos, therefore residents are encouraged to take precautionary measures. This closure is expected to be removed by Friday, October 20th. 

The Council of the Town of Hurley will hold a Special Meeting tomorrow, October 17th at 5:00 p.m. at the Hurley Community Center to discuss concerns of safety from Hurley residents and the Solid Waste services. Congratulations to Gila Regional Medical Center Emergency Room nurse, Kimberly Dyndiuk for winning this year’s “DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses”. The DAISY award, which stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System, was created in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who received eight weeks of compassionate care before passing away, to honor the amazing care provided by nurses as they care for patients and family members. Ms. Dyndiuk has been a nurse for over 9 years and was recognized for her professionalism, compassion and for her acts of kindness and sensitivity she demonstrates every day. 

Group sessions will be held for middle and high school students in Silver City who are struggling with Gender Identity every Thursday starting October 19th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the College Street Plaza. The sessions will be hosted by Susan Golightly, who holds a Masters in Counseling and Gender Studies and has been leading and facilitating support groups for over 10 years. The sessions are designed for everyone, whether you are looking to learn, share or listen and are aimed to foster mutual respect and understanding, helping all to grow and connect.
