In celebration of the upcoming holiday season, The Murray Hotel is hosting a food drive to collect canned and boxed non-perishable items for the local Silver City Gospel Mission. A donation box will be conveniently located in the hotel lobby, where guests and community members are welcome to drop off their contributions daily between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Donations will be accepted through December 23rd. The goal of this initiative is to support efforts to alleviate food insecurity in the community and make a meaningful difference for those in need.
The Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce recently held their 2024 Grant County Awards Banquet with guest speaker New Mexico Lieutenant Governor, Howie Morales. During the ceremony five individuals and three businesses received awards for their commitment and dedication to Grant County. The winner for “Citizen of the Year” was Belitha “Bea” McKinney, “Small Business of the Year” went to Flowers on the 11th, “Business of the Year” went to The Town of Silver City, “Volunteer of the Year” went to Norman Castrillo, “Non-Profit of the Year” went to Future Forge, Inc., “Lifelong Service to the Community” went to Mary Cowan and the “Linda K. Jones Humanitarian” award went to Lena and Carolyn Holguin. Also, the Chamber announced the election of the following officers and board members for the 2025 year. They include Bart Roselli, who is Director of the Silver City Museum, as President; Sharron Offut who is Senior Social Performance Specialist at Freeport McMoRan as Vice President; Melanie Gomez who is Senior Vice President and managing officer of First American Bank as Secretary; Jack Herdon who is Branch President of First Savings Bank as Treasurer, and the board is completed by Mike Morones who is owner of Mike Morones and Associates; Bruce Ashburn as an individual member; Dr. Sabrina Pack of SkyWest Media; Dr. Joseph Shepard who is President of WNMU; and Patrick Cohn, who is Grant County Treasurer. Congratulations to all the winners and the new elected officers and board members. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to the community.
In Hidalgo County News: Last week, Molina Healthcare, in partnership with the Hidalgo County Health Council, took a significant step towards promoting oral health by distributing more than 200 toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste to Lordsburg and Animas Elementary schools. This generous initiative was complemented by a series of dynamic dental care presentations led by the Lordsburg School Nurse, who captivated students with valuable lessons on the essentials of good oral hygiene. Through interactive sessions, the nurse emphasized the importance of brushing, flossing, and caring for teeth, empowering young minds with the knowledge to maintain healthy smiles for years to come.
