At last week’s New Mexico Safe School Summit, Silver Consolidated School student Elena Morales and Aldo Leopold Charter School students Kaelyn Doherty and Savanna Egge participated in a panel discussion on campus safety and violence. Speaking before law enforcement officials, policymakers, and educators from across the state, these students shared their experiences with lockdowns, the fear associated with school violence, and its profound impact on families and communities. They emphasized the importance of trust, open communication, and the presence of caring adults who are willing to listen and take meaningful action.

The Town of Bayard held its regular meeting during which the council approved several items, including assistance for the Santa Clara Senior Center and Stantec Task Order No. 4 for chlorination system improvements funded through Colonias. The council also authorized the purchase of a used vehicle for code enforcement from the New Mexico State Police. In addition, the council adopted Resolution No. 19-2025, ratifying an agreement with the Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments and approving the associated service dues.

Congratulations to Patricia Cano of Silver City who was recently honored as one of New Mexico Magazine’s True Heroes awardees, a recognition awarded to residents who make meaningful contributions to their communities through efforts such as organizing programs, securing essential resources, and engaging local youth. Selected from a wide pool of nominees, Mrs. Cano was recognized for her leadership in establishing a warming center in Silver City last winter.

To help families during the Thanksgiving holiday, the Silver City Police Department participated in No Shave November, raising $500 to support local families, which was matched by The Silver City Police Officers Association, bringing the total to $1,000, which was used to purchase gift cards for Thanksgiving baskets. Harrison Schmitt Elementary School also contributed to community outreach by organizing a food drive that collected nearly 600 pounds of food, all of which was donated to the Silver City Gospel Mission to assist families in need. In addition, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office provided Thanksgiving baskets valued at approximately $100 each to 15 families across Grant County, further enhancing local efforts to support the community during the holiday season.
