The Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) has awarded a $10,000 grant to Literacy Link – Leamos to support adult literacy initiatives. This funding is part of a historic, single-day donation by the Foundation totaling more than $13.2 million, benefiting adult, family, and summer literacy programs across the 48 states where Dollar General operates. Literacy Link – Leamos is dedicated to raising literacy levels in Grant County through free tutoring and community outreach projects, with a vision of building a community where every individual is literate.

There will be two Town Hall meetings for Grant County residents to share important updates and engage with the community. Both meetings will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will focus on recent outage statistics, enhanced system safety settings, and wildfire prevention strategies. The first meeting is scheduled for May 28 at the Cliff Elementary and High School Gymnasium, followed by a second meeting on May 29 at the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce. These sessions will offer residents an opportunity to ask questions, provide feedback, and speak directly with members of the PNM team.

The Gila Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees convened for a special meeting to provide an update on a community-driven effort to reestablish a family medical residency program in Grant County. This collaborative initiative is working in partnership with the University of New Mexico to implement a “one plus two” residency model, where medical residents would complete their first year at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces and their second and third years in Silver City. The revival of the residency program is considered vital for rural communities like Grant County, as medical professionals who train in such areas are significantly more likely to remain in the state and continue practicing in rural settings.
