Western New Mexico University’s (WNMU) faculty announced on May 16th that they are set to form a local union of the National Education Association (NEA), the largest collective bargaining organization in the United States. Within a few weeks of beginning its campaign to amass formal support, organizers collected signatures and cards from more than 2/3 of WNMU’s faculty and librarians. This push to form a local union comes in the wake of a tumultuous semester and will expand opportunities for faculty to serve, support, and mentor students. Building upon a decades-long tradition of amplifying faculty and librarian voices, the membership of this union commits to strengthening shared governance at WNMU.
