Registration for the Silver City Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is now open. The program will start on June 1st with the Gila Centennial celebration at Gough Park and will continue until July 27th with games, movies, glow in the dark paint, Legos, journal making, an end of summer foam party and so much more. Participants will also be able to receive prizes for turning in a Summer 2024 reading log. The program is open to children, teens and adults. The Healing House, La Casa in Deming recently handed out 350 certificates to Red Mountain Middle School students for completing the CDC’s “Dating Matters” curriculum. Seventh grade students started the program in January and dedicated their time to seven sessions that were aimed at fostering healthy, safe relationships. Dating Matters is an evidence-based program that equips students with crucial knowledge and social-emotional skills and helps empower students to identify and engage in positive relationships. 

As part of the “Dress a Girl Around the World” program, Deming’s Bethel Baptist Church’s sewing group recently donated hundreds of handmade dresses and shorts to children all around the world. “Dress a Girl Around the World” is a program through Hope 4 Women International that came to Deming in 2022 where members of Bethel Baptist Church came together to form a sewing group to help make handmade clothes for children in need. Since 2022, the church has donated over 700 dresses and 66 shorts to children in Juarez, Texas, Mexico and Africa.

The Department of Veterans Services will be making an outreach visit to Fort Bayard Medical Center on May 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to help veterans with any needs they may have. Veterans and their eligible dependents will be provided information on how to file VA claims for medical care, mental health counseling, disability benefits and payments, retiree pensions, burials and many other VA benefits. Staff will also help with any other issues a veteran or eligible dependent may need assistance with. Veterans with any questions or concerns regarding VA benefits are encouraged to attend.
