Silver Consolidated School District Superintendent William Hawkins will be hosting a “Bond Town Hall” meeting tomorrow, July 30th to discuss the state of the school facilities and the upcoming Bond. The meeting will give community members an opportunity to get informed, ask questions and share their thoughts on the future of Silver schools. Western New Mexico University hosted the Preservation Archaeology and Survey Field School this summer, which is a joint venture between WNMU, Archaeology Southwest and the University of Arizona. Twelve archaeology students from across the country took part in this experience, which introduced participants to archeological analysis and field techniques as well as to the methods and approaches used to interpret archaeological data. As part of the course, students had the opportunity to visit the NAN Ranch, the Archaeology Southwest campsite in Cliff and the Zuni and Acoma Pueblos as well as spending time at the WNMU Museum, engage in laboratory analysis, museum curation and their own chosen research projects. The Preservation Archaeology and Survey Field School gave students the opportunity to gain hands-on experiences and learn practical techniques that will help advance their archaeological skills.

Thanks to a bid awarded by the Silver City Town Council, the next phase of improvements to Little Walnut Road are set to begin next month. The council awarded phase four of the project to Deming Excavating Inc. for $2.9 million. Work will include new pavements, improved drainage, bicycle lanes, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks, signage and lane stripping north of Chavez Lane to Jack Frost Drive. Construction is expected to begin mid-August and will continue the work on Little Walnut Road that began in 1995.
