The Western New Mexico University President recently hosted a delegation of administrators from the Autonomous University of Chihuahua to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities. The memorandum will provide a pathway for academic, scientific and technological collaboration between the two institutions, including the opportunity for students at both institutions to earn dual degrees. It will also provide for research projects and activities engaged in by faculty, staff, or researchers from either institution and it encourages the joint development of seminars, conferences and workshops.
The Silver City Municipal Pool will be hosting a free “Sensory Swim Night” for families who have children with disabilities. Come enjoy some snacks and socialize with other families, volunteers, police officers and more. The swim will take place this evening, July 22nd from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The Virden Historical Society recently held a legacy celebration to celebrate the unveiling of the Virden Monument, which recognizes those pioneers who played a part in the settlement of the area. The celebration took place on the 4th of July weekend with a breakfast, tours of Steeple Rock, Beehive Caves, Sunset Diversion Dam and a dinner and dance. The unveiling gave community members the opportunity to honor the legacy of the Virden area focusing on the values of hard work and integrity.
Luna County 4-H members had a strong presence during the New Mexico 4-H Conference that took place earlier this month by finishing in the top five in six different categories. Some of the teams that placed were Agronomy, Entomology, FCS Bowl, Decision-Making and Horticulture. A special congratulations to Luna County 4-H Wildlife team members Braylin Chaffin, Monte Offutt and Eli Turner who took first place in their division and were able to capture the state championship.

The American Farm Bureau recently announced the “Veteran Farmer Award of Excellence”, a new awards program that seeks to elevate and celebrate those who have served our country and continue to do so through involvement in agriculture and the community. The program recognizes one veteran who has served or is currently serving in any branch of the United States Military and is actively involved in agriculture and their community. The recipient of the award will receive $10,000 plus reimbursement of up to $5,000 in travel and other expenses for the recipient and their guest to attend the American Farm Bureau Federation Convention in January 2025.
