Western New Mexico University’s undergraduate and graduate elementary teacher preparation programs have earned top honors in the National Council on Teacher Quality’s 2026 Teacher Prep Review, with both the Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and the Master of Arts in Teaching Elementary Education with Certification receiving an A+ grade in Reading. The recognition places WNMU among a select group of institutions nationwide recognized for providing comprehensive, evidence-based instruction in the Science of Reading.
Children and teens will soon have new opportunities to explore technology and creativity at no cost through the Silver City Public Library. Thanks to a grant from the John Henry Eldred Jr. Foundation, the library has purchased a classroom set of mini drones for hands-on learning and will soon introduce digital drawing tablets in the teen area. The tablets, which connect to computers equipped with digital art software, will allow aspiring artists to create and bring their designs to life while expanding access to innovative STEM and creative learning experiences.
The Silver City Town Council approved the town’s 2028-2032 Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan, which outlines priority projects for future state funding requests. Top priorities include improvements to the 50-year-old wastewater treatment plant, downtown sidewalks, curbs and gutters, Gough Park, and Little Walnut, with additional projects also identified throughout the town. The council also approved a separate capital improvement plan for the Senior Center, prioritizing new kitchen equipment, facility upgrades, vehicles, a backup generator, and solar panels.

Mr. Avalos brings more than 25 years of experience in education, including over a decade in district-level special education leadership. His expertise includes special education compliance, Individualized Education Program (IEP) development and implementation, instructional leadership, professional development, and data-driven practices that support student success. His experience and commitment to serving students with disabilities will strengthen partnerships with educators and help ensure high-quality special education services.
