During the next Silver City Rotary Club meeting, the Coordinator of the Youth Substance Abuse and Prevention Coalition Program in Grant County will be giving a presentation on substance abuse and what precautions are being made to address it. The presentation will take place on January 23rd from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Western New Mexico Memorial Building Second Floor. All community members are invited to attend.  

Work on the Catwalk Access Road continues, with recent progress made on pouring concrete headwalls and wingwalls for culverts. Crews also worked on improving sub-surface drainage as well as hauling and placing aggregate road base, elevating the roadbed. Heavy truck traffic is expected this week and next, with heavy hauling and concrete pours scheduled. 

Congratulations to Tyke Kipp of Hidalgo County who took first place in the American Contender Tournament West Regional Finals Steer Wrestling category that took place this past weekend. Mr. Kipp will now move on to compete on one of the largest stages in Western sports, The American Rodeo, where he will have a chance to win $1 million dollars. Best of luck to Mr. Kipp. 

In Deming News:

Luna County recently gave service recognition awards to three Luna County employees for their dedication and commitment to the county and community. Diana May-Diaz was recognized for her 5 years of service as a Probate Judge. Jesus Nunez was recognized for his 5 years of service to the Sheriff’s Department and Jose Prieto for his 5 years to the Road Department. Congratulations to all three employees.

Deming Police Chief, Clint Hogan will be retiring after 22 years from the Deming Police Department at the end of this month. Over the years, Mr. Hogan held various key positions within the department, including Police Officer, Criminal Investigation Division and several administrative posts such as Administrative Captain and ultimately Chief of Police. In honor of Chief Hogan’s retirement, the Deming Police Department is organizing a “last call” on January 23rd at 12:00 p.m. This event will feature one final ride across the city, concluding at City Hall, where his final call of service will happen.
