Western New Mexico University Adult Education students, Rose Le and Antonio Jimenez, will be honored as “Outstanding Students of the Year” during the New Mexico legislative session this month. Rose will be honored for her hard work and dedication to working towards a higher level of education and Antonio will be honored for being a hardworking student and for his kindness to everyone around him. The “Outstanding Students of the Year” will be announced at a press conference that will take place tomorrow, February 13 at the Roundhouse Rotunda. After the conference, Rose and Antonio will have an opportunity to visit the House and Senate galleries, where their accomplishments will be recognized by the Legislature. Congratulations to both students!

Silver Consolidated Schools is offering free Developmental Screenings for children 3 to 5 years old to help determine if they may be eligible to receive services as a student who is Developmentally Delayed. To qualify for the program a child must show a delay in one or more of the following areas: cognition, physical development, adaptive behavior and social-emotional skills. The screenings will take place on February 21st from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Silver Scholars Academy and prior registration is required. Deadline to register is Wednesday, February 14th. The Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program, a federal program administered by the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded $9,104 to Grant County to help provide shelter, food and supportive services for the hungry and homeless. The funds will go to non-profit organizations and government emergency food and shelter programs that target populations that are experiencing greater demands for assistance due to economic challenges. In Deming News: The City of Deming will be having a Town Hall meeting on February 13th to discuss ongoing projects that will be taking place throughout the year. The meeting will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 1275 East Pine Street. The public is encouraged to attend. 

Luna County recently gave service recognition awards to three Luna County employees for their dedication and commitment to the county and community. Jose Gutierrez was recognized for his 5 years of service to the Detention Center. Valerie Tyler was recognized for her 10 years of service to the Sheriff’s Department and Kristie Hobbs for her 15 years as Treasurer. Congratulations to all three employees.
