The Hidalgo County Commission recently recognized two individuals for their contributions to the community during a commission meeting. Katrina Parsons of Hidalgo County Emergency Medical Services was honored after being named the New Mexico Department of Health’s EMS Provider of the Year, an award that acknowledges her outstanding performance, dedication to service, positive community impact and commitment to training and mentorship. In addition, the commission recognized Mayor Glenda Greene for her four years of service and her collaborative efforts with Hidalgo County on numerous initiatives, including securing fair funding contributions for the local library and the senior citizens center.
Christmas tree permits are still available for the Gila National Forest, allowing individuals and families to harvest trees for the holiday season. Permits cost $5 per tree, with piñon pine available at no cost, and eligible fourth-grade students may obtain a free permit through the Every Kid Outdoors pass. Permits can be purchased online through website or in person at Gila National Forest district offices located in Silver City, Glenwood, Reserve, Quemado, Mimbres, and Truth or Consequences.

The New Mexico State Police announced the graduation of 18 new officers from the 106th New Mexico State Police Recruit Class during a ceremony held on December 19. Among the local graduates were Ever Gomez and Jose Salazar Jr. of Silver City, and Eunice Jimenez of Lordsburg. The graduates successfully completed months of intensive training that included physical conditioning, classroom-based academic instruction, scenario-based testing, and comprehensive field readiness preparation designed to equip them for the demands of law enforcement service across the state.
