Cliff High School was recently named one of the Best Small-Town High School Basketball Teams in America by Stadium talk dot com. Cliff High School is the smallest school on the list with only 155 students in grades 7th to 12th. Over the years, the high school has established a basketball legacy, winning 12 state championships between 1982 and 2016 and has won at least one state title in each decade since, including four in the 1990’s and 2010’s.
Congratulations to Juan Mendoza of Deming High School who was selected to be a part of the New Mexico 2024 Jazz All-State band, which is part of the multiple music programs of the New Mexico Music Educators Association. Juan has been part of the high school band for 2 years now and is one of 15 students across the state that was selected for the trumpet position in the All-State band. Good luck to Mr. Mendoza at The All-State Jazz Conference, which is set to take place next month at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
The Gila National Forest, Glenwood Ranger District will be hosting a public meeting to kick off public participation in the “Escudilla South” project on Wednesday, December 13th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Glenwood Community Center. Approximately 6,266 acres of the Gila National Forest are proposed for hazardous fuels treatments within a proposed project area that includes approximately 94,000 acres of the Gila National Forest located between Luna and Alma, New Mexico. Additional activities have been proposed for analysis under this project, to enhance recreational infrastructure, rangeland management, and wildlife habitat. The meeting will begin with a brief presentation, followed by break-out to staffed tables for one-on-one question and answer opportunities.
The Commons in Silver City is offering free “Community Cooking Club” classes to all those interested in learning more about cooking and preparing different types of meals. The class will provide information on how to prepare food using easily obtained ingredients such as cultural food recipes, comfort food and desserts. In Lordsburg News: The City of Lordsburg recently received a $1,059,090 grant from the Regional Recreation Centers/Quality of Life to revamp the softball field on 2nd street. The new field will include new turf, mounds and bases and will also have a retractable fence so the field can be adjusted in size for different divisions. While contractors work on the softball field project, the city plans to have city crews upgrade the dugouts and restrooms as well. The project is set to be completed by the end of June 2024.
