Several County Fairs are upcoming in August. Two of these included the Catron County Fair and the Hidalgo County Fair, both happening August 22-25.  Hidalgo County Fair queen court has been announced. Congratulations to Little Miss River Wagley, Miss was awarded to Valerie Renowski, Princess title to Charlotte Tassie and Hidalgo County Fair Queen, Journey Sheehan. Again, congratulations to these young ladies. Both the Catron County and Hidalgo County fairs have Facebook pages to learn more about dates and times of activities.

Also going on August 22-25 is the Great American Duck Race in Deming.  This will be the event’s 45th running of this great, family-fun event.  You can race ducks on dry and wet tracks, enjoy the carnival, entertainment pavilion, participate or watch the tournament of ducks parade, duck royalty pageant, cornhole and horseshoe tournament, great American tortilla toss, and golf scramble. The Silver City Town Council has amended the Town’s Affordable Housing Code.  This code revision changes the definition of a moderate-income family or individual from one whose household income is 120 percent of the area median income to 150 percent. The stated reasoning behind this is because  there have been few applicants for the Vistas de Platas subdivision that have come in just a little above the 120 percent mark and by raising it to 150 percent more applicants would be eligible.

The Silver Grant County Chamber of Commerce and Grant County Prospectors would like to invite the public to a luncheon on August 8th where New Mexico Lieutenant Governor, Howie Morales, will be speaking.  The combined organizations’ luncheon event will take place at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00pm at a cost for lunch of $15.  Please contact the Chamber to make a reservation, 575-538-3785.
