The Public Works Director has announced the temporary suspension of SIG Sauer P320 pistols at the Grant County Shooting Range. This precautionary measure has been implemented in response to widespread public concern and credible reports of safety issues associated with this specific firearm model. The decision aims to mitigate potential liability risks and ensure the continued safety of range users. All other firearms that meet the range’s standard safety requirements may continue to be used.
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA), a landmark piece of legislation that continues to make a lasting impact on public lands. In the Gila National Forest, GAOA funding has enabled long-overdue restoration of trails that had been neglected for decades. With this support, the Gila Back Country Horsemen of New Mexico and their partners have addressed 135 miles of deferred trail maintenance—some sections of which had not been maintained in 20 to 40 years. Their efforts included 9,000 volunteer hours, the removal of 2,000 logs, the installation of 600 trail markers, and extensive brushing, tread work, and additional improvements to enhance trail access and safety.
As part of the Gila National Forest’s ongoing Black Fire recovery efforts, road repair work will begin on a one-mile segment of Forest Road 150 (North Star Road) on August 11. A contracted road crew will conduct minor resurfacing, replace culverts, and implement additional improvements between the Beaverhead Work Center and Wall Lake. The project is scheduled to take place from August 11 through September 5, enhancing road conditions and supporting long-term forest restoration and accessibility.
