Local youth Reece McSpadden has achieved a significant milestone in the western performance horse industry, earning qualification for the National Ranch and Stock Horse Alliance National Championships. She will compete in a comprehensive lineup of events that test the versatility and skill of both horse and rider, including ranch cutting, cow work, reining, ranch riding, ranch trail, and ranch conformation. Motorists traveling through Luna County between April 5 and April 12 should expect ongoing construction and traffic delays along Interstate 10, NM 11, and several local roadways. Bridge repairs are underway on I-10 near Deming and Akela, with lane closures and additional projects set to begin later in April, continuing through May. Construction is also active on NM 11 near the Columbus Port of Entry, where a culvert project is expected to last through fall. Meanwhile, chip seal operations are taking place on multiple roads around Deming and surrounding areas.

The New Mexico Department of Wildlife will conduct its Biennial Review of the State List of Threatened and Endangered Wildlife Species, with public comments on the 2024 review accepted from April 6 through July 6. The process evaluates whether species should be uplisted, downlisted, or remain unchanged, based solely on biological and ecological factors. Public input will be collected and presented at a State Game Commission meeting following the review period, and followed by a final 14-day comment window before recommendations are finalized.
