The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department will host a public hearing tommorrow, April 21 at 6 p.m. at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center to present information on Freeport-McMoRan’s 2024 Closure Closeout Plan update for the Chino Mine. The event will also feature a 5 p.m. open house for community questions. The updated plan details proposed reclamation strategies and financial assurances to support long-term water treatment and site cleanup, efforts considered critical to protecting public health and the environment following eventual mine closure. This is a normal part of the permitting process. This plan just ensures that whenever the mine eventually closes that reclamation and funding are in place.

The Tyrone Water and Wastewater Association is preparing to launch a nearly $7 million project to replace the community’s aging water system and rehabilitate its water tank, addressing infrastructure built about 60 years ago with outdated transite pipes. Funded largely through state grants and loans, the project will add new lines, valves, and hydrants to improve reliability and safety. The upgrades will serve 322 residences, though connections from meters to homes will remain the responsibility of property owners, and the association aims to eventually take over billing and system management to support future improvements.

In Luna County news:

The Luna County Planning Department has announced a temporary suspension of burn notices effective April 17, due to heightened fire danger conditions. Officials cited high winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation as contributing factors behind statewide restrictions. Prohibited activities include open burning, such as agricultural and debris fires, as well as campfires and fireworks. The suspension will remain in effect until conditions improve and it is deemed safe to resume burning.

Officials with Luna County are inviting residents to submit high-quality photographs for use on a new county website designed to highlight the region’s beauty, culture, and everyday life. Requested images include landscapes, community events, agriculture, wildlife, historic sites, and other scenes that reflect the character of the area. Participants must include their name and a brief description with each submission and, by submitting, grant the county permission to use the images for website and promotional purposes. Photos may be submitted via email to LHernandez@Luna County.gov, with a deadline of May 15.
