Gila National Forest Silver City District Ranger recently presented an update on the Black Fire Recovery Project during the Grant County Commission meeting. The Gila National Forest and its partners previously held public meetings in June and August 2025 to gather early input on an Environmental Assessment based on restoration efforts outlined in the 2024 Watershed Restoration Action Plan. The Silver City mayor reported a week of community engagement, meetings, and oversight activities. Efforts included attending local events, coordinating public safety responses, and observing law enforcement activity, as well as meeting with residents and community organizations to discuss issues such as homelessness, economic development, and downtown planning. Additional activities included site visits, constituent outreach, and addressing administrative and policy-related questions.

The Western New Mexico University Board of Regents approved tuition and fees for the 2026–2027 academic year with no increases, marking the third consecutive year of flat rates, and reported stable financial conditions with reserves exceeding required thresholds. The board also authorized moving forward with the $1.4 million purchase of Sixth Street Elementary School from the Silver Consolidated Schools District to house early childhood education programs, with anticipated readiness by fall 2027. The proposal will proceed through additional state and local approvals before finalization.

Rural health care providers in New Mexico can apply for a share of $50 million through the Rural Health Care Delivery Fund, part of a three-year, $146 million investment that has supported the recruitment of more than 800 health care workers and expanded care to over 125,000 residents in underserved areas. Eligible applicants include Medicaid-enrolled providers serving communities with health professional shortages.
